During its 56-year history, Craigflower educated generations of boys who went on to distinguished careers. From the Victoria Cross recipient Hugh Malcolm to broadcaster Andrew Marr, the school's alumni made significant contributions to Scottish and British life.
Hugh Gordon Malcolm, V.C.
1917–1942
Wing Commander, Royal Air Force
Hugh Malcolm was educated at Craigflower and Trinity College, Glenalmond. He joined the Royal Air Force as a cadet in 1936 and became a distinguished squadron commander in North Africa during World War II.
In November and December 1942, Malcolm led daring low-level bombing attacks on Bizerta airfield despite fierce opposition. On 4 December 1942, while providing close support to the First Army, he received an urgent request to attack an enemy fighter airfield. Though heavily defended and without fighter escort, he led the attack successfully, but the squadron was intercepted by an overwhelming force of enemy fighters. His aircraft was shot down in flames.
Victoria Cross Citation: "Throughout his service in command of a light bomber squadron in North Africa Wing-Comdr. Malcolm's leadership, skill and daring were of the highest order. His last exploit was the finest example of the valour and unswerving devotion to duty which he constantly displayed."
The Malcolm clubs for rest and recreation are named in his memory. He remains one of the most celebrated Craigflower alumni.
